A Comic

November 17, 2012

Hello

It’s been almost a month since my tour, but that’s how long it’s taken to recover. I started a tour diary but things got too crazy to follow through with it. It bothers me, these first two pages hanging around on my website, unconcluded (I’ve since taken them down). I’ve tried several times to finish, but the in-the-moment spontaneity that was pretty much its only reason for existing in the first place was gone. There was nothing to do but turn it into an actual comic. So here you go, the first three pages of my unfinished tour diary, hardened and un-spontanified into a regular, wordy old comic.

As for my tour-I want to thank everyone who helped me along the way-it was a real shoestring-budget, by-the seat-of-your-pants sort of thing, and most of the time I didn’t know what I was doing. All the way up the west coast, from L.A. to Anacortes, and also here on the east coast, kind people stepped in and out to offer places to stay, rides to & from the airport, good company, moral support, a place to stash my luggage for the day, good meals, directions, and so much more. It seemed like magic sometimes, but of course it wasn’t, just kind individuals. I’m going to try to list some of them here off the top of my head, to say thank you. If I’ve forgotten anyone or gotten something wrong please let me know, and I’ll also come back and add to the list if I remember.

My pens always explode when I try to draw comics on planes. What’s your secret?

I think roller ball pens work…I used to just draw all splattered in ink, freaking out the other passengers.

I love that book “Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind”. I learned a lot from it when I was younger and feeling a bit overwhelmed by the world. That and “The Art Spirit” by Robert Henri. I haven’t mastered the posture yet either, now I wonder if side bulges are simply creases from slouching too much? Panel 5 made me laugh so much!
