Heavy New Year

January 2, 2013

Here you go, a sad, humorless, dour little diary comic. My New Years resolution is a jumble of vague notions about figuring out what is wrong with me and fixing it but where does one even start with that? So today I’m beginning with a more concrete resolution, to publish comics on this blog regularly again. I’m going to gradually post some of my past few weeks’ diary comics over the next few weeks. In my way I’m trying to use one resolution to do the other. I warn you, they will be dreary.

Working through your first resolution is what making comics is all about, right? Also, go to the doctor!

I’m looking forward to following your dreary life, if only to distract me from my own

Hope somewhat regular posting is a resolution that sticks, and if you put out any new collections, I’ll be sure to snag one

I love autobio/diary comics, even dreary ones, so I look forward to reading as you work through things. I hope it is helpful and cathartic to put your worries down in ink, as I find it to be.
Your comics style is always interesting – verbose, but never boring.

While you may feel that your comics are dreary, they are also nearly always jammed to the gills with a sly humor (often skulking about like that creature in panel 6) and an earnest acuity about yourself and your work. Don’t take this the wrong way, but I look forward to your dreary comics to come.

Yeah, this is why I cancelled Facebook and Twitter. Now I don’t even look at those sites over my girlfriend’s shoulder anymore. The obsession is totally gone. But I still don’t get any more work done than usual. I don’t know what the answer is.

Gabrielle. Pam read this this morning and said you didn’t sound so good; but the strip is well done. Keep in mind that everybody gets the blues around new years. Hang on. You have a lot of talent. My feeling is, that you have not peaked, creatively speaking, and that your best days as an artist/writer are still ahead of you. You need to some hard headed decisions and make sure it happens. We’re rooting for you.

This reminds me of your earlier comic on Epicurus and the requirements for happiness – money may not buy it directly, but it does provide freedom to live your life without constant worry over every detail. I hope things get easier for you! I’m looking forward to your show in Providence. :)
