Heavy New Year

January 2, 2013

Here you go, a sad, humorless, dour little diary comic. My New Years resolution is a jumble of vague notions about figuring out what is wrong with me and fixing it but where does one even start with that? So today I’m beginning with a more concrete resolution, to publish comics on this blog regularly again. I’m going to gradually post some of my past few weeks’ diary comics over the next few weeks. In my way I’m trying to use one resolution to do the other. I warn you, they will be dreary.

If you haven’t gotten yours yet, my apologies. They’re on their way. I’m going to suspend the project until I’ve gotten them all finished. When it’s back, I’m sorry to say the price will be raised. Although this project has been incredibly gratifying, it’s taken far more time and effort than I’d accounted for. Thank you to all of you who bought a portrait. They carried me through the holidays.

A Comic

November 17, 2012

Hello

It’s been almost a month since my tour, but that’s how long it’s taken to recover. I started a tour diary but things got too crazy to follow through with it. It bothers me, these first two pages hanging around on my website, unconcluded (I’ve since taken them down). I’ve tried several times to finish, but the in-the-moment spontaneity that was pretty much its only reason for existing in the first place was gone. There was nothing to do but turn it into an actual comic. So here you go, the first three pages of my unfinished tour diary, hardened and un-spontanified into a regular, wordy old comic.

As for my tour-I want to thank everyone who helped me along the way-it was a real shoestring-budget, by-the seat-of-your-pants sort of thing, and most of the time I didn’t know what I was doing. All the way up the west coast, from L.A. to Anacortes, and also here on the east coast, kind people stepped in and out to offer places to stay, rides to & from the airport, good company, moral support, a place to stash my luggage for the day, good meals, directions, and so much more. It seemed like magic sometimes, but of course it wasn’t, just kind individuals. I’m going to try to list some of them here off the top of my head, to say thank you. If I’ve forgotten anyone or gotten something wrong please let me know, and I’ll also come back and add to the list if I remember.

Desert Island Comics, Jami Attenberg, Julia Wertz, Word Bookstore, Tom Kaczynski, Kevin Panetta, Ron Rege jr, Mandy Kahn, Skylight Books, Shannon o’Leary, Jethro Bell, Ken Hayes, Donna Stone, Gravity Goldberg, Steve Thornton, Booksmith, Perry Shirley & Escapist Comics, Cori Melious, Marc Arsenault (Alternative Comics), Nicole Georges, Powell’s Books, Larry Reid, Eric Reynolds, Fantagraphics Bookstore, Janice Headley, Jen Vaughn, Charles Burns, Genevieve Castree, Phil Elverum, Liz Nofziger & Goetz Friederichs, Hillary Chute, Eugenia Williamson, Chris Ware, Nat Towsen, Ishah Janssen-Faith, The Moon, & the BCGF

news, events, reviews

September 11, 2012

Hi

I really want to post the comics I’ve done recently, but I don’t want to ruin it for when you come see them in the upcoming slideshow readings. So this is just another text-heavy blog entry full of upcoming events and links to reading material about my new book, The Voyeurs,

-First off, next week, (Sept  15th) I’m coming to SPX! Selling The Voyeurs and also July Diary with Uncivilized Books.

-The week after, as part of the Brooklyn Book Festival, on Saturday, September 22nd, at eight pm I will join Michael Kupperman, Julia Wertz, Lauren Weinstein, Robert Sikoryak, Lisa Hanawalt & Aaron Diaz for what promises to be a seriously funny slideshow reading at Bergen Street Comics for the “bookend” event, The Comics Crowd.

-On Sunday, September 23rd I’ll join Jaime Hernandez, Carla Speed Mcneil and Adrian Tomine to talk comics with Bill Kartalopoulos, also for the Brooklyn Book Festival.

It’s hard to track down on the link but here’s what it says:

Saint Francis Auditorium (180 Remsen Street)

2:00 P.M. Worlds Built over Time. This all-star panel brings together the narrative geniuses of Jaime Hernandez (Love and Rockets), Carla Speed McNeil (Finder), Adrian Tomine (New York Stories) and Gabrielle Bell (The Voyeurs) to discuss how they’ve developed characters, stories, and imagined worlds over serial publications. Moderated by Bill Kartalopoulos, co-organizer, Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival. Featuring screen projection.

Please take a look at my events page for future upcoming events.

A lot of reading material about my book! Very nice reviews like this one from The Comics Journal.

And this essay from Humor in America.

Then there is this wonderful one from Kirkus that I can only seem to find through the Barnes & Noble website.

And Boing Boing recommends

And this one on goodreads suggests maybe I should get my meds checked.
