Green Verses
This comic was begun about a year ago, after a sort of variety show that my friend Tony Groutsis curated. There were songs sung, poetry read and slideshows performed. I did a slideshow for one of my comics, and Kevin Kinsella read some of the poems of Sasha Chernyi that he’d been translating. I loved these poems; they were so simple and visual, morose and funny. Later on Kevin wrote me to tell me he liked my slideshow, and I got the idea to adapt this poem into a comic, which you can now find in the May issue of The Believer.
It was a charmed night. Katie Fowley of Lightful Press was also there and now this fall there will be a collection of Kevins translations of Chernyis poems.
You can read more of Sasha Chernyis work translated by Kevin here.
Thanks, Gabrielle! This looks so great. You can *adapt* anything I’ve ever done… :)
Love this!
These look great!
Great work as usual, Gabrielle….your consistency is…alarming! Anyway, I have a boring question that I’d really appreciate you to answer, if you have time, please! I’d like to know what pen you use to ink with. Sorry, I did say it was boring, it’s just I’m intrigued when I look at the different qualities in, say, your early Mome stuff, which has a more “snappy”, variable
line and your collected “Lucky” stuff, with the more precocious, spindly and consistent line…I’d be very grateful if you could reply but if not, it’s cool, thank you for reading! Oh and I dug the shit out of your strip in the America’s Best Comics 2009!
thanks Antony!
I use a rapidograph pen (koh-i-noor) for the usual Lucky stuff, but this Green Verses was a very small brush.
Thank you so much for replying! Again, sorry for the boring question but I’m so glad you could clear that up for me. Greatly anticipating your next work. Thanks again!
Lovely and disarmingly funny!
