Slice o’ Life

November 22, 2011

Hi

It’s been about four months since I’ve drawn a comic and this one is to get my poor rusty feet wet again. Hopefully I will soon regain my comic-weblogging voice and start posting regularly again.

One note-if you missed the announcement last July, the character Tom will now be going by his true name, Tony, since legal complications have been cleared up (he’s promised not to sue me).

I’ve been trying to express why that ad raises my hackles for a while. You guys have nailed it.

    Gabrielle,

How often do you find yourself sitting around thinking about yourself?

I saw your work in an anthology in Barnes & Nobles the other day and I asked myself the following question:

“Why is gabrielle bell in every Best Of comics anthology?”

Do you have powerful relatives? Are you good at social networking within the indie comic industry? HOW do you manage to be so well placed?

    I honestly don’t understand.

    Please explain.

Also: Why do so many indie comic artists live in New York and Portland (and think that writing comics about themselves is an accomplishment)?

Future historians will look back and declare that independent art in the US was the most self-centered garbage a world of war ever bothered to produce.

    Love,
    ME

Maybe independent art should be supplanted by quality state-sponsored art that’s for the people and by the people, but not people from Portland or New York.

Thanks for making your thoughts heard Gabrielle.

      Love,
      ME

      Ew.

Because her art and writing is beautiful and we find it touching, you jealous twit.

    Anonymous,

Did you mean to use the word “supplanted” in a sarcastic or ironic way?
Were you reaching for the word “supplemented” ?

    Do tell.

Oh, and thanks for making your thoughts heard, Anonymous.

    Love,
    ME

      Dear Anonymous,

I despise irony, sarcasm, deadpanism and tragi-comedy. I also hate magic.
I do like dark chocolate, Lucky blogs, counter-revolutions, and Sundays in the park with George.

      Love always,

      ME

I gotta say, Guess, I think Gabrielle is always in the Best of collections because her work consistently rules year after year. This year’s is A M A Z I N G in so many ways. I read it after I came home from dinner with two of my friends and one of our main topics of discussion was feminism and how sexism is still alive and well and feminism isn’t. Gabrielle’s comic reminded me it’s not completely dead, with her excellent humor, intelligence, and inimitable style!

    Mr. and/or Ms. Guess-
How often do you think about yourself? I’m guessing a lot if: 1) you’re a human being, and 2) you had to write a comment on how you dislike reading a comic artist’s work on her own blog. No one’s forcing you to read Gabrielle Bell. And I see no problem with slamming Gabrielle’s work on your own blog or whatever, but putting that comment here? That’s pretty hateful.

    Hello
Just wanted to say, THANK YOU to EVERYONE for reading my comics and discussing and supporting them. It’s true, I think about myself most of the time. This is because in my own small way, I’m struggling most of the time, and I find it helps to write and draw about and share it. And I’m very grateful for the support and freedom to think about and write about myself. I hope everyone is having a happy Thanksgiving!

All artists think about themselves, all people think about themselves. It’s how we survive. My preference would be that people engage in this universal practice knowingly. There is no shame in self-reflection.

I was wondering how David Lineberger made that comment, so I did a Google search for ♡ and Google said that my search – ♡ – didn’t match any documents so maybe I should try different keywords.
